Technology has a large role to play in enhancing the competitiveness of South African suppliers. The CSIR was tasked by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) to help implement a national technology localisation plan through the Technology Localisation Implementation Unit.
TLIU’s interventions include, Firm Technology Assistance Packages (FTAPs), Sector-Wide Technology Assistance Packages (SWTAPs) and Technology Development Grants (TDGs); a Science, Engineering and Technology Industry Internship Programme (SETIIP)
The Technology Localisation Implementation Unit has assisted in excess of 85 companies with FTAPs since 2011. The initial programme involved primarily the foundry industry and a total of 26 foundries were provided with technology interventions. In 2012, the programme was extended to a variety of other sectors in order to support the deliverables of State-Owned Companies (SOCs), in relation to Competitive Supplier Development Plan (CSDP) and Supplier Development and Localisation (SD&L).
