Discovering and developing our future Artisans

From Boiler makers, to fitter and turners, millwrights and even a civil engineer or two.  These matric learners are actively improving themselves both in the practical and academic classroom.   “I am very proud and excited about our matric’s this year.  Each learner has set personal goads and if there academic results don’t speak for themselves I can let you know that 5 to 10% increases in certain subject have been made, which is fantastic to witness.”  - Lara Slogrove

We continue to support the learners after matric in assisting them with opportunities and guidance well into their tertiary education.

Excitement continues to rises with the grade 11 and 10 learners as the grade 11 learner have an opportunity to extend their mentoring by applying for one of 8 spots to join a D3 programme in the October Holidays where the following academic activities will be shared, they include career guidance specific to their skill sets for industry. Commitment to succeed, Finance options, Communication tools, leadership, peer pressure and health leisure and fitness to balance life.  An intense programme where outdoor fun activities seamlessly intertwine into classroom lessons.

The learners also had an opportunity to share their thoughts from the programme so far.  It is without a doubt that the company site visits are a favourite as the learners get to see what happens in industry and get to talk to artisans about their daily work and experience to careers they did have not had exposure to yet while at school.  A very close second is the continuous mentoring where industry members join the daily practical classroom and assist the teacher and learners.  Tips are shared with the learners to improve their work from experienced mentors in their fields of trade.

Overall each learner without a doubt understands the value of good academic results to help improve there future.

Mary Jane, a matric learner, who would like to be a fitter and turner or welder one day, responded to the question:  How has this programme influenced your life? with the following:  “It has influenced me in a positive way on how to do our practical’s correctly, managing time and also encouraging me to seek more information and further my studies.  Letting me gain more knowledge by giving me the chance to go and visit the companies as well.”

As always thanks goes out to all VAMCOSA members who without you this would not be possible.  Thank you.
