With the final exams for our grade 10, 11 and matric learners around the corner, D3 visited the Fumana Comprehenisive School, on Friday 16 October, to provide mentoring and guidance to the learners during there last few weeks at the school for this year.
Lara Slogrove from D3 re-integrated the importance of good grades to provide more opportunities after matric, and discussed practical goal setting to achieve this. “We are encouraging the learners to improve on their current marks by committing to personal goals, dedicated study time, study buddies and teacher support.”
Finances, as always, is an interesting topic especially with regards to the expectation of remuneration once qualified. We encourage all learners to open their own bank accounts whilst still in school, and start a savings plan to ensure they have funds to apply for opportunities after matric. In addition we share with the learners salary expectations on qualification – a reality check for some learners - and explain to the learners that experience is golden.
Our day was rounded off with open discussions on the project to date, and it is clear, from the learners at the school as well as the teachers, that the knowlegde and expertise that the VAMCOSA members are adding is invaluable. Through the mentoring sessions the learners acknowlegded that they are gaining confidence, skills and understanding upon each visit to the school.
The mentoring will continue in 2016 and we will continue moulding, advising and guiding the mechanical learners at the school.
