The day included a VAMCOSA Video introducing the learners to this career path, a walk through the school's mechanical workshop and a chance to talk to industry members about various careers that this sector is looking for.
Actual valve drawings and samples of all sizes are brought to the event, from companies such as AVK Holdings, Dual Valves, Cobra Watertech, RGR Technologies and Mitech. The learners have a chance to see exactly how a valve goes from a 2D drawing to an actual 3D working part and they have the opportunity to open and close the valves on display, what better way to understand this sector of manufacturing. The South African Institute of Foundrymen join this event and showcase castings of various products which are enjoyed by the enquiring minds of the youth.
Career exposure is vast and includes boilermakers, fitters and turners, maintenance staff, plumbers and sales staff to name but a few, thanks to the well informed and passionate staff who engage with the learners at these events. We had a number of learners interested in following this career path for next year and are optimistic that we will yet again have an overflow of new grade 10 Mechanical Artisan learners for 2018.
