New Mineral Processing Equipment Industry Cluster launched

01 September 2014

The first meeting of the Mineral Processing Equipment Cluster was held at the end of June 2014. Hoosen Essack of Roymec Technologies and Fernando Monteiro of Tega Industries SA were selected to champion the cluster.

Those present at the meeting acknowledged the importance of clustering in South Africa. Sybil Rhomberg, Managing Director of SACEEC, explained that clustering is not a new concept; in fact it began in the mining sector in the Scandinavian countries as early as the 1700’s, which has contributed to these countries’ subsequent development into dominant global forces. “Clustering is about maximising the collective assets and skills of a sector whilst maintaining your individual intellectual property, co-operating in the value chain yet still remaining firm competitors. South Africa does not have the money for the capital investment needed to gear each of the individual companies to be global players, but it could be achieved for the industry as a whole,” she said.
