'Steel Committee' established to monitor 'Fair Pricing' Pledge

20 June 2016

The newly formed Steel Commission comprising key representatives of industry, established by Minister Ebrahim Patel, has been tasked over the course of the next 5 years with monitoring and providing of recommendations on the impact of the changes in import tariffs to the primary steel industry on;

downstream steel users; pricing of products in the primary steel industry to downstream users and the steel industry in general. Further more they will assess the implications on jobs in the steel industry value chain, as well as the import/export trends within the steel value chain.

As part of this, government are working on various supply-side measures to support the downstream steel industries, such as the attached on rebates (see attached) and the invitation to take part in the exercise to ensure primary steel products not made in SA are not taxed under the newly introduced steel import tariffs.

The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) published the qualifying and selection criteria relating to the new Corporate Accounts Unit. The Corporate Accounts Unit will aim to foster better relations between the DHA and employers deemed to be of high value to South Africa. Entities which qualify for registration as a “Corporate Entity” will enjoy the following benefits (amongst others):

  • The ability to fast-track employees’ visa applications;
  • Dedicated follow-up and support mechanisms which will only be available to Corporate Account Holders;
